- Always wear comfortable thin soled shoes
- Avoid wearing sunglasses that have thick rimmed sides as they can create blind spots and obscure your vision
- Looking ahead as far as you can comfortably see will make it easier to respond to any challenging conditions that may be up ahead
- When driving in heavy rain, try to stay in the middle lane when possible, as there is usually less build-up of surface water - meaning the risk of aquaplaning is reduced
- There's no such thing as a silly question when it comes to learning to drive, so, just ask your instructor
- Many learner drivers delay learning to park. Include one or two practice parks in every driving lesson.... you will appreciate it in the long run
- Do 'real life' driving - suggest becoming the family driver whenever they go somewhere
- Set goals and PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE
- Have FUN. There's no reason why learning to drive shouldn't be an enjoyable experience
For the Driving Test
- Have a lesson just before the test; this will help reassure you
- Get a good night's sleep the night before the test
- Don't tell EYERYONE that you are going for your P's
- Book the test on a day when you have nothing else major on
- Arrive at the RMS (formerly RTA) 15 minutes before the test
- Ignore other people's 'Horror Stories'....they are not useful
- Don't assume you have failed if you make a mistake - dwelling on it can affect the way you drive during the remainder of the test. So forget it...and move on.
- Don't feel awkward about silences; it doesn't mean the testing officer doesn't like you. Some testing officers may be a little less chattier than others, but that's life. The main reason for the silences is so that you can concentrate and focus on the tasks at hand. All you need to do is listen carefully to directions
- Don't become distracted by what the testing officer is writing down. The test course is broken up into 25 zones requiring them to do a considerable amount of writing
- Feel confident. Your instructor wouldn't have recommended that you attempt the test if they didn't believe you were ready
