- Allow the learner to experience a variety of different situations, such as, busy out of local area roads with various traffic challenges and wet conditions
- Plan the drive - advise the learner what areas need attention in advance so that the lesson has clear goals and structure
- Discuss what route you will be taking before heading off and provide early, clear and specific instructions
- Purchase a copy of the RMS Road Users' Handbook to assist you in teaching and to keep up-to-date with changes to road laws
- Try to ensure that the learner receives a minimum of 2 hours driving practice per week
- Leave your parents' hat in the driveway. No YELLING, Stay positive and calm - even when 'stuff happens' and remember, if it's not constructive...don't say it !
- Keep sentences short whilst the learner is driving - save the more detailed feedback for when the car is parked
- An effective way to teach a learner a technique or correct procedure is to demonstrate it first - YOU drive
- Be aware that many learners become particularly confident after fifty or so driving hours. They feel that they can manoeuvre and control the car pretty well...complacency can sometimes accompany this new found confidence
- Update the logbook as you go, otherwise it can become a bit of a nightmare
- Be aware that when you are driving, they are watching...even when they have their heads stuck in a mobile - so be sure that the only habits you are passing on are good ones
- If you are having a bad day, tired or stressed - reschedule the lesson
- View the learning process as a great opportunity to spend some valuable one-on-one time with your teenager
